The domain name system (DNS) at Rutgers University is comprised of two views of the same data store. One of these views, called the outside view, exists to provide information about our network to the global internet. The other view, called the inside view, exists to provide information about our network to only those hosts that are a part of that network. Though the majority of the information in the DNS is identical in both views it is the intent of this system to allow disparity when desired or necessary.
The inside view of the DNS data is provided to the university community through a group of servers called the network service systems. These servers provide data only to hosts on the rutgers network and will not answer queries from hosts on the rest of the global internet. The inside view also contains host information that utlizies RFC-1918 private address space which by convention must not be seen by other hosts on the global internet. A host must exist in the inside view if it is to be utilized by other hosts on the university network.
The outside view of the DNS data is provided to the global internet through a set of servers registered with the internet registries for out domains. This view of the data and the servers that provide it exist to provide information about the Rutgers network to the rest of the internet. A host must exist in the outside view if it is to be utilized by hosts from outside the university network.
In order to facilitate testing of DNS two special hosts have been
added to the directory. The host inside.rutgers.edu will
appear only on servers supporting the inside view of the data. The
host outside.rutgers.edu will only appear on servers
supporting the outside view of the data. The information for both
hosts is provided below.
